Finding this was a treasure, in so many ways! My great-great grandparents settled on Whidbey Island. They were a part of establishing the ferry and the first church there, and they are buried there as well. This piece gave me a visual of the island that I had never seen and your connections in music and verse added so much to this special place. Thank you! ~Wendy 💜
Wow! That is incredible. Thank you so much for sharing. Whidbey is a very special place, and I can’t imagine what it must have been like when your great-great-grandparents were making their home there. Thank you for listening / reading / commenting!
Thank you, Nadia! The whole idea of turning has really been on my mind — going to be digging into it a bit more in a post tomorrow, too. Really appreciate you listening.
I was lucky enough to travel to Nepal early this year and the prayer wheels were one of my favourite parts. It's such a personal meditation/self-care to this for a moment and turn the wheel and just concentrate on what you are thinking.
Thank you for this wonderful music piece, it must be one of my most favourites so far. :)
I found myself solaced by the murmur sounds of the prayer wheel. I listened to Turnings more than once. It calmed my serenity and let these surface feelings dissolve. Thanks to Fog Chaser. I recall that Whidbey Island is a hot spot for paranormal activity. Is there anything unusual around the Washington area these daze?
Thanks so much for listening — I'm glad it could provide some solace. Yeah, I've had a few spooky moments on Whidbey for sure. Especially when I was playing the bell alone in the woods.
It was so surreal. I just remember reading an article online about Ufos, cryptids, and other paranormal activity on Whidbey Island. That must have been years ago. Funny how the mind thinks sometimes. Thanks for the still moment. It alleviated my heightened stress levels.
The instrumentation in this is so damn good. And that bell is so clean in there. I can feel the evolution in this piece, especially compared to some of your Volume I work. Great stuff man
Love the mix of tones in this piece. Soft sounds, light touch. The bell adds great texture nested in the piano. And even though I realize this was meant to be a simple recount of your process, the line... “I played the bell by hand and branch and stone...” is a beautiful one. Thanks for continuing to share your music, process, images, context.
Matt, I always enjoy the subtlety of your instrumentations and arrangements and this is a perfect example. There are so many small textural and sonic nuances floating in and out of this beautiful soundscape. I know how much extra time and thought this requires and it’s obvious that you put so much care and attention to detail into your music.
This is beautiful Matt! It made me think of my a Grandmother whose faith in prayer was unmatched by anyone I’ve ever know. Your music transported me to her sitting room, Granny, sitting beside the fire, saying the rosary while her fingers moved methodically around the rosary beads. She found such comfort, hope and love in prayer.
Oh I really love this piece! The melody reminds me a little of gamelan music.
Thanks, Rachel! That's such an interesting point - I hear what you mean!
